Local cheerleaders will be "Cheering for a Cause" on the weekend, at an event organized in the wake of the tragic suicide of BC teenager Amanda Todd.
Todd was just 15 when she took her life. She had been subjected to vicious, relentless bullying for years.
Amanda Todd had been a cheerleader, and the leader of the local organization Cheer Legacy Athletics decided to do something to acknowledge her. Lesia Rathje, the Cheer Legacy Athletics head coach and club owner, created the idea for a "Cheering for a Cause" one-day cheerleading camp that would see all the proceeds go to the Be the Change anti-bullying program at John Paul II Collegiate.
The one-day camp will be held at Notre Dame School this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and boys and girls of all ages are welcome. The cost is $20 per participant, with pre-registration encouraged. Walk-ins, however, are welcome.
Rathje also designed a t-shirt for the event, with the logo "Cheering for a cause - Honor the legacy of Amanda Todd." Seeing the logo, the t-shirt company offered to make a donation to the event.
