MELFORT — Pastor Paul Dubois spoke at the Melfort City Council meeting Aug. 13, asking to rezone the Melfort Journal building on 901 Main Street so it has the potential for him to use it as a worship space.

He hopes to move his congregation coming from the Northeast Christian Fellowship there as well as hold Bible schools at the location.

“I know you’re not working on it today but I really want you to seriously look into this,” Dubois said. “For us, it’s a win-win situation if we get this property, because the second phase of our building plan won’t have to go forward. We can valuable space for our church as we continue to grow.”

The space is currently zoned as commercial property.

Spraying

Chas Vanderbyl of Fly’n Dutchman Ag, which does aerial spraying for pesticides and fungicides, spoke at council asking for a change to the company’s contract.

Vanderbyl asked to pay a single fee for the beginning of each year rather multiple fees over the year. He also wants to purchase his fuel from his own sources.

“In my mind nothing you’re proposing is acceptable,” Melfort Mayor Rick Lang said to Vanderbyl. “There are rules and they’re still there, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as you agreed to when you built the hanger so I don’t see a reason to take this ... We’re prepared to stick by the original agreement that you agreed to, and we agreed to.”

The discussion has been opened up, and council has not made a decision as of yet.

“When we take it to committee, when we make that final decision, it should be, and I hope it will be the final decision,” Lang said.

Animal control

The city is moving its animal control services contract for Melfort, as the previous contract holder stepped away from it.

The service has been contracted to Melfort Comfy Kennels.

The change will require no additional funds, as it is a transfer of the existing contract.

The contract will go until the end of the year, where it will be accessed. The motion passed.
