HUMBOLDT — The City of Humboldt is preparing to launch a new website.

Barring any major technical difficulties, the new site will be released on Monday, March 23.

Penny Lee, the city’s communication director, said the goal is to make it easier to find information.

“When people go to our site, we want to answer and address the typical questions.”

The updated website will be organized into thematic categories. For instance, a Live Here section would focus on what residents would need to know for their day-to-day lives, like garbage pickup or utilities; a What To Do section would have coming events and community calendar; a Visiting Here section would focus on the information that tourists would want; and a Doing Business section here would have information that businesses would need, as well as a business directory.

The current website is organized by civic department, which Lee said isn’t as easy for citizens to find information because they 1) may not know what each department does, or 2) they could be looking for information that could conceivably be covered by more than one department.

“We're going to be relying on it [the website] a lot for people to go to as an information source that we hope will be able to provide anything that anybody wants,” Lee said.

The city has also relaunched a monthly e-newsletter. Lee said it has had a good response so far.

The current website was launched in July 2014. In 2015, it won an outstanding achievement in web development from the International Web Marketing Association in the government category.
