MELFORT — Melfort council passed a motion, six to one, to invest $50,000 into replacing windows on the historic post office and install an art installation donor wall. The windows will be replaced with historic replicas.

This motion is due to an approximate shortfall of $50,000 between the revised project budget of $250,000 and the $200,000 revenues raised through grants and fundraising.

The Preservation and Rehabilitation Committee will continue their fundraising efforts.

The one vote against came from Coun. Trent Mitchell.

“Well, and again, it’s not that I don’t want to see the post office maintained,” Mitchell said. “I definitely do want to see the post office maintained. The reason I voted against the resolution is because I want to see a plan. I need to see something that’s going to lay out what the roadmap for that facility is and make sure that we’re doing the right thing for the building and the community. So I want to see a plan.”

The project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2019.
