City thanks public works dept. for work during heavy snow fall

The City of Humboldt Public Works and Utilities Department had their hands full removing snow from the snowmageddon event that started on March 3.

The City of Humboldt Public Works and Utilities Department had their hands full removing snow from the snowmageddon event that started on March 3.

Director of Public Works, Peter Bergquist, says that it was reported that 24 cm of snow fell according to the weather reports from St. Peter’s College. Of course, that number varied from where you were and winds made some areas heavier than others, he says.

Main streets Hwys 5 and 20 were plowed as soon as crews were able, which allowed plows to stay on top of keeping the downtown main streets cleared.

Bergquist says they had the city grater, the contract grater, and the city loader working on removing the snow, as well as contract trucks moving snow off the roads.

Because of the heaviness in the residential areas and the number of vehicles getting stuck, Bergquist said they made the decision to have a night crew out for the entire week.

Snow taken off the roads has nearly filled the Humboldt Airport area, says Bergquist.

Frost is causing problems with sanitary and water lines for a few households and Bergquist says they will be keeping on eye on lines that have a tendency to freeze up first.

Two delegates also presented to council with Share Hinz of Safe Communities Humboldt and Area coming to council to discuss the programming they were able to do in 2017.

Safe Communities provided programming around safety and injury prevention for all ages with programs for students and seniors.

Hinz says that all of their funding is reliant on funding availability with 11-13 programs supported annually for the past 10-13 years.

With all their program, Hinz estimates that Safe Communities was able to reach 2,300 people in 2017 with their various programs.

MNP City Auditors presented their audit service plan to council. See more about their plan for the city’s audit in next week’s Humboldt Journal.

Mayor Rob Muench acknowledged the work of both the Emergency Medical Services Charity Event committee and their hard work putting on that event.

Muench also recognized the work of the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce and their work putting on the Mark of Excellence awards ceremony on March 7.

The ceremony was a way to celebrate the region as well as Humboldt, he says.

“We’ve always proclaimed ourselves to be in part of a greater region and trying to work together with our businesses in other communities. It was nice to see the chamber honour some of those as well.”
