The City of Humboldt's annual Summer Sizzler is trying on something new for size this year. The newness starts with the dates - the Summer Sizzler will no longer be the same weekend as the city's Canada Day festivities. This year, it will be the weekend of June 22-24, one week prior to the Canada Day weekend. The second big change the city has made to the event is to bring in a midway as one of the feature attractions over the weekend. After some deliberation, the city decided to discontinue the rodeo that had previously been the featured attraction, due to declining popularity. So, with new dates and a new feature attraction, what are the other events that Sizzler fans can look forward to?The Battle of the Bands, Part 2, will help kick off the event on the evening of June 22, only this year the organizers say it will be bigger and better than last year. The competition for high school bands will be held in the curling rink, where they should be able to accommodate more bands and rock and roll into the night. At the same time the bands are battling it out, a second event will be running in an outdoor venue on the grounds of the Uniplex. Arts Humboldt will host a cultural stage under a tent where different acts will perform, and have already confirmed Freddie and Sheila Pelletier as the evening's headlining act. The third change to the regular lineup of Sizzler events is the parade, now moved to a new time slot. The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the parade again this year. It will take place Saturday June 23 at 9 a.m., and will proceed from downtown Humboldt to Centennial Park around the Uniplex. Humboldt JCIs will be running two events during the Summer Sizzler, on Saturday, June 23. There's the annual Demolition Derby, starting at 3 p.m., followed by a dance in the curling rink beginning at 9 p.m. Kal Hourd and Bullrush are the two bands that will be on stage. On Sunday afternoon, June 24, pencil in a reminder to take a tour of the junker cars that will be on display on the Uniplex grounds. While all this is going on, fun-seekers will be able to enjoy the midway attractions that will be set up on the north parking lot of the Uniplex grounds the afternoon of June 22. The midway will run from 3-11 p.m. Friday, 12 noon - 11 p.m. Saturday, and 12 noon - 6 p.m. Sunday.Other events for the Summer Sizzler are awaiting confirmation by the City of Humboldt's Community and Leisure Services department.
