NORTHEAST — Cumberland College’s board of directors is hoping to have a new president and CEO selected to replace Tom Weegar by the new year.

Corinna Stevenson, the board’s chair, said a human resources committee of their board will be searching to fill the position.

“We’re going to run our search process internally and we’re going to work closely with the ministry of advanced education at this point,” she said.

The new president will have to be approved both by the board and the ministry.

Weegar’s resignation as president of Cumberland College was effective as of March 29.

Lynn Verklan, the director of finance and administration, has been appointed as the interim president for nine months.

Stevenson said one of the tasks the board has yet to do is determine what kind of qualities they want to see in a new president and what kind of direction they want them to take over the next five to 10 years. The chair said the province has just appointed three new members to the board, so the plan is to get them oriented and up to speed in late August or early September and then have that discussion.

“There’s a lot of transformational change going on at the provincial level in the advanced education system, so we’re just trying to be aware and be informed and hire appropriately for that.”

One of the issues Weegar raised when The Recorder talked to him when he announced his resignation was the pay for the position. Stevenson said the pay scale has been determined by the advanced education ministry.

“We’ll just have to be open and transparent about it,” she said.

Stevenson said the board wants to make sure the selection process for the new president is open and transparent –  and done right.
