RCMP F Division is participating in a community constable program and is looking for six candidates to fill its commitment to a pilot project that is also being adopted by RCMP in Manitoba and Northwest Territories.

The first troop is scheduled to enter the Regina training depot in spring, 2015.

In a press release, Cpl. Natasha Szpakowski, F Division Pro-Active Recruiting Unit officer, explains community constables are special constables members who are recruited from the communities they serve. These officers are armed, uniformed peace officers with specific knowledge of the language, culture, geography and history of their communities, she adds.

Community constables complement existing regular members. They receive 21 weeks of training at the depot and can provide investigative support when required.

Community constables will focus on crime prevention/reduction and community engagement activities. According to Szpakowski, the program will help increase the RCMP's cultural competence and strengthen relationships, visibility, communication and continuity of services within the community.

The role of the Community Constable is to enhance, and not replace, existing RCMP officers in a community, she says.

The deadline for submissions for potential candidates is March 7. For details visit www.rcmpcareers.ca.
