The St. Elizabeth Community Garden held their first meeting on Feb. 27. This year will see some changes coming to the garden.
“We always look for better ways to be doing things in the garden. Our focus will be on the community aspect of the garden for this season; how do we grow plants together and share ideas and have some laughter in the gardens,” says garden organizer Wade Stock.
This is the second year north of the water treatment plant on the north side of town and there is still much to learn about improving the location.
Recent work on the water treatment plant has caused some concerns of slumping but Stock says the City of Humboldt and the Community and Leisure Services Department has been great to work with on those kinds of issues.
This year will also mean the distribution of duties with Stock looking for people to contribute their time to promoting the garden, composting, and set up and take down.
Anyone can join and all the equipment is provided, so Stock says that gardeners do not need any tool and there is always someone around to help, “just talk to your next door plot neighbour,” he says.
“For first time gardeners, it’s a wonderful way of doing it because you’ve got a lot of support. If things are going tough, you can ask questions if they’re there. It’s the best way to learn.”
The gardeners are getting antsy, says Stock, and gardeners were jumping at the chance to get organized and begin the new season.
Potential gardeners can call or visit the Elgar Petersen Arena to have their name put on the gardeners list.
Return gardeners have first option on garden plots with Stock assuring new gardeners with more than enough plots available for first time gardeners.
