Concern was raised at city council last Monday about drivers not obeying school bus stop arms in school zones.

The issue was raised by Councillor Brad Pattinson, who expressed concerns that "a lot of people ignore the stop arm."

He asked Battlefords RCMP S. Sgt. Phil Wilson if they had received complaints from the public about it.

Wilson confirmed the RCMP have received complaints about it, not so much from the public but from the school divisions.

Just two days before, he said, bus drivers had provided police with a list of numbers of license plates of vehicles that had run the stop arms.

But Wilson said that information provided was "probably not sufficient to prosecute." They ask for more information from the drivers, he said.

He said a more detailed form has been created for a driver to fill out, which can normally take the place of a statement. There, the driver can provide more detailed information such as vehicle and driver descriptions, location and time.

Wilson said the RCMP are prepared to lay charges against a registered owner in cases like that. There are demerit points to the owner if charged and convicted, he added.

School bus stop arms have been an ongoing topic at City Hall over a number of years. The stop arms came back into use by school buses in the city following a referendum in North Battleford on the issue in October 2009.
