HUMBOLDT — After a presentation from a resident, council is having a closer look at allowing backyard chickens.

Rob Muench, Humboldt's mayor, said after the presentation at the May 11 executive committee meeting, council asked city staff to conduct research on the matter.

“There's a number of pilot projects out there that we wanted to get a little more information.”

According to the committee’s minutes, council discussed enforcement issues, regular inspections, licensing requirements, concerns from neighbors and the potential of increased predators in Humboldt city limits.

“I think all the councillors are also doing some research on their own,” Muench said. “These decisions aren't made lightly, as we've come to realize over the years that we need to do our homework before we make a decision.”
