The City of North Battleford is urging residents to be aware of coyotes after one was put down by bylaw enforcement.

The coyote was spotted near Saskatchewan Hospital exhibiting strange behaviour Jan. 2. City personnel shot and killed the coyote.

They believe the coyote suffered from canine distemper, a viral disease that does not affect humans but can be a serious affliction for wild animals and domestic pets. Puppies are at a greater risk than older dogs, as the disease could kill them.

In the wake of this incident, Fire Chief Pat MacIsaac is advising pet owners to ?keep their annual vaccinations up to date and if you notice a coyote within city limits or acting unusual by approaching people or staggering, report it to the special constables at 445-1775 or call the RCMP.?

The City is also providing some tips to residents to avoid attracting coyotes. These include the following:

? Do not feed any wildlife including birds. Feeding wildlife can attract coyotes, more for the presence of prey than for the feed itself.

? Pets should be fed indoors. If a pet is kept outdoors, any uneaten food should be removed immediately.

? Garbage should not be left outside in plastic bags; it should be put out on the morning of the scheduled pick-up.

? Owners of small dogs or cats should monitor their pets carefully when they are outside and not allow them to run at large.
