It's a new facility for adult learners.
Carlton Trail Regional College (CTRC) started moving into their new facility, connected to both the new Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) and Humboldt Uniplex, on February 10.
The new facility houses the administration offices, classrooms, instructional offices and a student lounge.
When first entering the building, visitors arrive at the front desk. Next to the desk is a small waiting area.
Past the reception area are the administration offices, as well as a boardroom and resource room for both administrators and instructors.
There is a long hallway connecting the administration area to the student area. Between the two areas is a door which can separate the two if need be.
The student area has a large lounge area, with a breakfast bar style counter and chairs, couches, and a small kitchen complete with a fridge, dishwasher, microwave and sink. Off the kitchen area are offices for instructors and a small staff area.
Off the halls in the student area, which are lined with lockers, are classrooms for both post-secondary and adult basic education classes. At the end of the hall is a set of double doors connecting the college to the HCI common area and main entrance.
At this time the door are locked from CTRC's side, stopping students from entering HCI. The doors will be open during HCI school hours once CTRC is fully operational.
As of February 16, CEO Bill Cook said they were almost all moved into the new building.
"On February 10, everyone moved in the afternoon from lunch on," said Cook. "We just about got everything that afternoon, with the exception of our classroom equipment and instructional - that is moving over from the high school, most of it next week."
The classrooms and instructors will be moving over the week of February 20 because the students will be on a week-long break, making it easier to move.
Once they are finished, everything that was in the old facility will be in the new one.
"Everything that we had in the old collegiate is coming here, just like the old collegiate did," said Cook.
The administrators of CTRC are enjoying their new space.
"We are just about all in and really starting to enjoy the place," said Cook. "I think it is gorgeous."
He explained that little moving issues have not been a problem.
"Like anything new, you find something that needs to be attended to, but that's typical," said Cook.
He is impressed with the way CTRC, HCI and the Uniplex are all connected.
CTRC is connected to HCI's common area. That common area has a hallway which leads to the main entrance of the Uniplex. All three facilities can be accessed without going outside.
Cook said one of their students already utilized this link between the three facilities when coming to the administration offices last week. The student was able to enter at the Uniplex main entrance and follow the hallway to CTRC.
"The way that this facility is blended in with the school divisions and the city, it is very well done," said Cook. "This complex has everything."
When they are settled in, Cook believes it will give students more opportunities to utilize the city's facilities.
"Once it gets fully operational there should be fluid boundaries between the different parts so where it makes sense we've got movement back and forth," said Cook.
Students will be starting classes in the new facility on February 27.
