This is quickly becoming a familiar scene at council meetings - a packed gallery filled with city employees quietly seeking a new contract from the City. CUPE Local 287 has been without a contract since March 31 of last year. In a media release issued Jan. 23, local president Dan Suberlak expressed frustration over the state of talks, stating "we're not feeling respected by the employer and council."

City employees are becoming familiar faces in the gallery at North Battleford council meetings.

The members of CUPE Local 287 were once again at council Jan. 23, as they have been on two previous occasions recently, in another show of solidarity as they continue efforts to seek a new contract offer from the City.

The union, which represents about 100 city workers, has been without a contract since March 31 of last year.

In a media statement issued Monday, CUPE Local 287 president Dan Suberlak stated, "although we have seen some movement on the part of city council, we're very frustrated by the lack of progress in contract talks."

"We're not feeling respected by the employer and council."

He also noted information in the city's recently adopted budget appears to indicate city councillors are in line for a seven per cent increase this year. Suberlak states that only adds "fuel to the fire."

The union states they are seeking a contract offer that addresses the inequities in the current wage scale and allows employees to keep up with the cost of living.
