Efforts are ramping up this month to get a downtown business improvement district established in North Battleford.

Correspondence from Rhonda Shepherd, chair of the Downtown Business Association, was received by North Battleford city council Monday. In that letter Shepherd called on council to develop and support a bylaw to establish a downtown business improvement district, with the bylaw requiring public notice.

The purpose of the BID will be to "improve, beautify and maintain public property in addition to city beautification and improvements, create a safe and secure environment, market and promote the BID as a business and shopping area, develop and host special events and provide vision and a voice for the downtown."

She noted a steering committee has created a plan and proposal, and noted the proposal has been well received by businesses.

Director of Business Development Denis Lavertu indicated a delegation from the Downtown Business Association would come before council later this month, at which time they expect to present their proposal. Lavertu also confirmed council would consider whether to develop a bylaw following that presentation.
