TISDALE — Phone frauds continue to be a problem in Tisdale, with the RCMP detachment receiving eight different reports in a two-week span.

“A lot more people calling in to tell us, ‘hey, this is happening,’ and telling us about the attempted scams,” said Cpl. Mike Benjamin with the Tisdale RCMP.

“Eight reported cases are only the tip of the iceberg of what is happening. Most people who become victims are either too embarrassed to come to the police to report what happened, or they don’t know that they’ve been a victim.”

Benjamin confirmed that at least one of the victims had money stolen from them.

He said the calls tend to be the typical ones that residents have been getting in the past such as the caller posing as Revenue Canada.

“They’re trying to get banking information or to get people to send them money – particularly ITunes cards or funds through ITunes, it’s typically to an address outside of Canada. These are red flags that should be seen right away by most.”

The RCMP will be doing a presentation at Caleb Village on March 6 at 2 p.m. in relation to the fraud situation. The presentation is open to the public.

“We’ve done three or four a year,” Benjamin said. “So if anybody is interested in attending that’s where it will be.”

In the two week period from Feb. 12 to 26, the detachment responded to 49 calls for service which included two collisions, two impaired drivers and two calls under the Mental Health Act.
