It was raining cats and dogs. Well, maybe not. But those four-legged, fury friends were on the minds of many Saturday, as the Battlefords Humane Society held its second annual supper and auction at the Gold Ridge Centre.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the local animal shelter. The annual cost to operate the shelter is approximately $180,000 and the enchanted evening is one of the major fundraisers hosted by the Humane Society.
Michelle Spark, manager of the animal shelter, expressed her appreciation for all those who donated items for the auction and to all those who give toys, food, money and time towards the care of the animals.
Spark said she also hopes the public becomes more aware of what they can do to assist animals both through education on care and immunization, neutering and licensing of animals.
The Enchanted Evening consisted of a delicious pasta meal followed by a live and silent auction conducted by Kramer Auction, as Harry Michael Dekker was the MC for the evening.
Many local businesses and friends of the humane society donated items for the event and Dr. Shawn Haas, president of the Humane Society board, thanked the staff at the Humane Society and Lakeland Veterinary for their hard work and dedication towards the animals.Haas also mentioned the need for volunteers and board members to keep the local chapter effectively operating in the Battlefords.
One of the future goals of the Humane Society is to have a new location and building in the Battlefords.
