Each pair of vamps in the Walking With Our Sisters exhibition represents one missing or murdered indigenous woman or children who never returned home from residential schools.

A major travelling art memorial to honour the lives of missing and murdered aboriginal women is due to visit North Battleford in early 2016, and events planned for this month are being held in preparation.

Walking With Our Sisters is a commemorative art installation that will be at the Chapel Gallery between Jan. 15 and Feb. 7, 2016.

North Battleford Galleries has been actively preparing for the visit, having had two community conversations to discuss activities and set up volunteer groups and putting a float into the Northwest Territorial Days parade

A third community conversation is to be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Chapel Gallery. Members of a women's group from Onion Lake will speak about their annual Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women awareness walk.

Sustenance will be shared. Organizers ask that if you are able to bring soup, bannock or other food that you would like to share it would be appreciated.

Subcommittees are to be formed that evening as well for those who have volunteered.

Monday, Sept. 14 a sage-gathering expedition has been arranged. Organizers say some sage has already been gathered, but more will probably be needed. If any is left over, it will be used at other venues across Canada, as many communities don’t have sage growing in their environment. If you are interested in helping gather sage, meet up at the Allen Sapp Gallery at 5:30 p.m. to travel in a convoy to the location.

Combining its involvement with WWOS with Culture Days in Canada, the Allen Sapp Gallery is offering some opportunities to celebrate throughout September.

A Learn to Bead class will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m.

For those who already know how to bead, a Bead-In will be held. Bring your beading and join others in a relaxing environment at the Allen Sapp Gallery. Refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, Sept. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m., Ribbon Skirt Making will be held at Kanaweyimik, 91 -23rd St. in Battleford.

For those who like to bake, organizers are looking for baking donations for a  WWOS-NB Fundraising Bake Sale Friday, Sept. 25 from noon until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Allen Sapp Gallery's hosting of an Artisan Market to celebrate Culture Days.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer for WWOS, please call Leah, Shawn or Raven at 306-445-1760 or email [email protected]
