Nipawin council has terminated the food services agreement with Spice Hospitality Inc. at the Evergreen Centre.

The decision was made at a special closed meeting of council Oct. 27 and was effective Oct. 30. The restaurant is now closed.

That was followed up with another special closed meeting of council Nov. 2.

“Council resolved to instruct administration,” said Barry Elliott, the town’s administrator, “to ensure that there is some interim arrangements in place to accommodate the users to the best of our ability, for the functions that are confirmed, and also to research and inform council of potential options for ongoing food services in the facility.”

For the events that have already been booked, the town will be working with local caterers and similar businesses to ensure they are served.

Spice Hospitality Inc. was selected by council at a meeting Jan. 9 after a tendering process. On June 26, the contract was amended to reflect changes to the company’s ownership structure.

Elliott said he was unable to say, for legal reasons, why the contract was terminated. He said the town will be looking at options on how to move forward.

“There’s a lot of options,” he said. “It’s a possibility of another tender but I think there’s going to be a lot of discussion on other options than going to tender before we actually get some direction from council.”
