Few RMs to hold elections in 2011

Two elections, 22 incumbents returned and three new councillors elected by acclamation. That's the situation in local Rural Municipalities after nominations for positions in Divisions 2, 4 and 6 closed on September 21.

Two elections, 22 incumbents returned and three new councillors elected by acclamation.
That's the situation in local Rural Municipalities after nominations for positions in Divisions 2, 4 and 6 closed on September 21.
In nine RMs in the immediate Humboldt area, there are just two elections taking place, which is an unusually low number.
The RM of Three Lakes will be holding an election for the Division 4 seat, which three people are vying for: incumbent Gordon Koeferle, and newcomers Lyle Lepsenyi and Roger Fleischhacker.
The only other election is in the RM of Lake Lenore's Division 6. Incumbent Pat Assie is being challenged by newcomer Ken Kajner.
Elections for both divisions will take place on October 26.
The low number of elections could be due to a change instituted last fall that extends the term of office for RM councillors.
Traditionally, councillors were elected to two-year terms, so RMs had to open nominations for positions on council every year (one year for Divisions 2, 4 and 6, and the next year for Reeve, and Divisions 1, 3 and 5).
But last fall, it was decided to extend councillors terms to four years. This meant that for the 2011 election only, councillors will be elected to three-year terms. Next year, councillors elected in 2010 will be up for re-election, and those elected will serve four-year terms.
Only three new councillors were elected by acclamation.
In the RM of Usborne, whose office is in Lanigan, Jack Gibney replaces Earl A. Schmidt as the councillor for Division 2.
In the RM of Lakeside, Division 2 incumbent Rob Longmuir has been replaced by newcomer Mark Thibault.
And in the RM of Prairie Rose, which is based in Jansen, Darin Pederson will replace Stan Robson as the councillor for Division 2.
The rest of the Divisions in all nine RMs had incumbent councillors returned by acclamation.
