March 5 has been set as the grand opening date for the CUPlex field house.

That announcement was made Thursday. Expected to be there are representatives from the City of North Battleford as well as officials from Battlefords Tribal Council, who hold naming rights to the facility.

There will be a ribbon cutting as well as announcements at the event. One of the announcements is expected to be the unveiling of the official name of the field house, which has been referred to unofficially as either the Battlefords Tribal Council Field House or BTC Field House in media reports up until now.

The field house, which includes a turf and court surface and also a running track, represents the final component of the Credit Union CUPlex to open. The aquatic centre, the theatre and the curling centre, all opened to the public during September, although the curling centre's grand opening was held in October.

The completion date for the field house was pushed back a few times due to construction delays, forcing events that were announced for the facility to change plans.

This time, though, there are no obstacles in sight to a March 5 opening. In a field house construction update to city council this month, Parks and Recreation Director Keith Anderson noted substantial completion was achieved Jan. 31.

Anderson told council, "the building looks great and I think people will really enjoy using it."
