You've heard of people shaving their heads or cutting their hair for a cause.

Well, last week North Battleford's Director of Finance Matthew Hartney parted with the locks he has been growing over the past year and a half - and has donated it to Locks of Love.

That is a non-profit organization providing hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Most of those helped by the organization lost their hair due to alopecia areata, a condition that has no known cause or cure.

Hartney's decision was welcomed by Mike Halstead, city marketing and communications co-ordinator, who knows all about that condition.

"I was delighted to learn about Matthew's selfless motivation to help kids with this condition because, as someone who was diagnosed as an adult (six years ago), I knowalopecia isn't something a lot of people are aware of or know much about, includingmany doctors and specialists," said Halstead in a media release.

"Alopecia causes a quick and dramatic change to the appearance, and as a result, a shattered confidence and self esteem inmany cases, especially children."

Halstead was there to witness Hartney get his hair cut at a downtown barber shop on Wednesday afternoon.

While the goal was to help improve peoples' appearance by donating hair, Hartney ended up improving his own appearance with his new short hair look, so everyone wins in the end.

For those seeking more information about Locks of Love, the organization's website is at www.locksoflove.org.

This isn't the only instance of Hartney growing his hair for a cause. Last November he grew a moustache as part of Movember efforts, along with a team of other city officials and employees. That effort was to raise money and awareness to fight prostate cancer.
