North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services is hosting Fire Prevention week next week, hoping to send a message to residents to "have two ways out."

The activities begin Saturday and run through Oct. 13, with several events designed to highlight fire prevention and safety.

Saturday local firefighters will answer questions and provide information about home safety at Sobeys from 1 to 4 p.m.

The department will host their annual beef on a bun event Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. They serve beef on a bun with coleslaw and dessert for only $6, with proceeds going to the Burn Unit Fund.

Friday, a student from each school will win the opportunity to be the fire chief for a day. The student gets a tour of NBFES headquarters, an opportunity to operate firefighting equipment and wear firefighting clothing. Prizes will be provided along with information about fire safety and planning a home escape.

The "chiefs for a day" will get a Domino's Pizza lunch with the fire chief and other NBFES members.

Saturday, Oct. 13 there will be a Home Fire Safety Information Booth set up at Territorial Place Mall near the Dollar Store between 1 and 4 p.m. manned by local firefighters.

Throughout the month NBFES will conduct fire drills at various facilities throughout North Battleford. Members will then provide input into how the drill can be improved. There is also a home fire safety inspection contest where names will be entered into a draw for useful fire prevention materials. Free home fire safety inspections are being offered through the year. To book an inspection, call the fire hall at 445-1770.
