The good news is we are free of the cold and wet winter weather. The bad news is conditions are so dry that we now have to worry about fires.
The City of North Battleford and the R.M. of North Battleford have been placed under a fire ban, due to dry conditions and high winds, until further notice.
“We have already attended grass fires and the fire ban is a precautionary ban during the dry conditions,” said North Battleford Fire Chief Trevor Brice in a statement.
The ban “means controlled burning and any kind of burning outside of an approved fire pit is prohibited until further notice.”
According to the City’s news release, the fire department is approving the use of legal fire pits so long as extreme caution is exercised. People are urged to maintain close supervision of the fire, have an adequate supply of water available to extinguish or control it, properly extinguish after use and pay close attention to wind conditions and spark hazards.
However, open air burning, which is burning outside of an approved fire pit, is prohibited until further notice.
Beyond that the fire chief is urging residents to keep their properties as fire safe as possible under the current conditions.
“Keep dry vegetation and combustibles away from buildings, be cautious with discarded smoking materials, and please report any suspicious activity fire starters to the RCMP and or Community Safety Officers,” said Brice in a statement.
Anyone with further concerns should contact the NBFD at 306-445-1770 and or the R.M. of North Battleford office at 306-445-3604.
