Fire investigators to return next week, scene still too hot

Fire razes Turtleford elevator

More time is necessary before investigators are able to determine the cause of a fire last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning that ripped through Turtlefords's grain elevator and threatened buildings next door on the town's Main Street.

Volunteer fighters from Turtleford were assisted by volunteer departments from St. Walburg and Glaslyn to control the massive blaze.

Fire Chief Brent Edwards says, "They spent most of the night protecting the co-op grocery store and some other buildings on Main Street" that were threatened due to the heat. The fire was eventually extinguished Wednesday morning and Highway 26, which was closed during the night, was opened again by 5 a.m.

Investigators were at the scene of the fire Thursday, but had to reschedule for early next week because, says Edwards, "it's too hot for us to access right now."

The elevator that burned was a former Sask. Wheat Pool structure that was privately owned.
