Monday saw the introduction at North Battleford council of amendments to the City’s fire prevention and emergency services bylaw.
First reading took place Monday at City Hall and it will return next month for second and possible third reading and passage.
The most significant change in the bylaw is with respect to false alarms, according to Fire Chief Albert Headrick.
Those impose tougher penalties. Among the proposed penalties are $200 for first false alarms, $500 for second and $750 for third or subsequent false alarms in a 12-month period.
The idea is to get North Battleford in line with what other cities are doing.
“The service providers that come in here will know that we mean business, no different from Saskatoon, Regina, Yorkton, P.A., whatever,” said Headrick.
But council, including Mayor Ian Hamilton, want some clarification on some of what’s in the bylaw before it goes ahead. The bylaw comes back to council for more discussion in August.
