A lengthy police standoff has come to an end in North Battleford.
Battlefords RCMP had responded to what they called a firearm complaint on the 2000 block of 101st Street this morning. In an update from Battlefords RCMP at 12:30 pm, police confirm the incident has been resolved and that two men have been taken into custody.
There will be a continued police presence on the scene. The RCMP also thanked the public and the media agencies for their cooperation in the matter so that police could conduct their work safely. .
The incident and resulting police standoff took place over several hours on Saturday morning.
A house near the corner of 20th Avenue and 101st Street was surrounded by police, some of whom had rifles drawn.
According to a media release issued by RCMP at 9:55 a.m., they reported that suspects were believed to be inside the residence, but the number of persons inside the residence was unknown. Multiple RCMP members were on the scene.
However, at that time they also reported there was no immediate threat to the public and that the situation was contained. The public was asked to stay away from the scene and to not announce police presence on social media, and to not post police officer or police vehicle locations.
Eventually, two male suspects emerged from the home with their hands up, and gave themselves up. By noon, the incident had ended and things had largely returned to normal, though a few police vehicles continued to maintain a presence on the street.
More details on the incident as well as on the arrests and charges laid is expected. Police say the investigation into the matter is ongoing and an update will be provided once it is complete.
