One of three individuals accused in a violent Edam armed robbery was sentenced in Queen’s Bench Court Oct. 2.

Joel Daniel Dillon of Onion Lake First Nation received an overall sentence of five years in a federal penitentiary on three counts: break and enter to commit robbery, forcible confinement, and intention to commit an indictable offence while having his face masked.

The three counts are in relation to a robbery and home invasion that happened in January, 2018.

With respect to those individual counts, Dillon received four years concurrent on the robbery and confinement counts, plus one year consecutive on the face-mask count. He receives credit for 16 months remand time, which means he serves the remaining 44 months in a federal penitentiary. A recommendation has been made by Justice Lyle Zuk for Dillon to serve that sentence in Bowden Institution in Innisfail, Alberta, but it will be up to corrections to decide whether that will be accepted.

Justice Zuk also imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition on Dillon. A DNA sample has also been ordered.

All other counts against Dillon were withdrawn by the Crown at the conclusion of sentencing.

In imposing sentence, Justice Zuk accepted the joint submission made by Crown and defence counsel. The five years is in line with the sentence imposed some time ago on Darian Meesto, one of two other co-accuseds in the case.

Another co-accused, Fraser Kane Littlewolfe, remains in custody facing break and enter, committing a robbery, wearing a disguise, forcible confinement and several firearms counts in the case. His next appearance is scheduled for Oct. 18 in North Battleford provincial court.
