Gala will conclude Mental Health Week

It's Mental Health Week from May 6 to 10 and a variety of events have been planned locally to increase awareness and support for mental health services working for mental health in the Battlefords.

It's Mental Health Week from May 6 to 10 and a variety of events have been planned locally to increase awareness and support for mental health services working for mental health in the Battlefords.

Monday there will be a flag raising ceremony at North Battleford City Hall at 10 a.m. attended by the Battlefords Approved Home Operators, followed by a community barbecue at the Canadian Mental Health Association Battlefords Branch at 1011-103rd St. in North Battleford from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A smokie on a bun with coleslaw and a drink will be available for $6.

Tuesday will feature a talent show at Saskatchewan Hospital from 1:15 to 3 p.m. Snacks and beverages will be served.

Thursday, a Walk for Mental Health will begin at the Saskatchewan Hospital to let decision makers know the community hasn't forgotten the promise of a new Saskatchewan Hospital. There will be transportation for those who are unable to walk or go the total distance.

The walk will proceed to the North Battleford Legion where the CMHA Battlefords Branch, Portage Vocational Society and Edwards Society will host a Spring Fling Celebration with hotdogs, refreshments, cake and entertainment. Everyone is welcome.

Thursday will also see bake sales being held at both the Frontier and Territorial Place malls from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. sponsored by the Edwards Society.

The week wraps up with the fourth annual Champions of Mental Health Gala, sponsored by the North Battleford Branch of the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association. The awards banquet is held in recognition of individuals, organizations and businesses in our community who have a positive impact on the lives of persons living with mental illness.

It will be held at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford and will feature entertainment by the Cochin Community Players who will present the one act comedy, Bloom by Saskatchewan playwright Leeann Minogue. Tickets are available by calling 306-937-7657 or 306-445-3067.
