The provincial government has again signed on to a gas tax agreement with the government of Canada.

The agreement, spanning 10 years, will send $56.3 million to municipalities for infrastructure projects in the year 2014-15. According to a provincial news release, $292.7 million is earmarked for Saskatchewan municipalities over the first five years of the program, and the agreement will see more eligible project categories for infrastructure funding including regional and local airports, disaster mitigation, broadband connectivity and culture, tourism, sport and recreation infrastructure.

The latest deal was signed between provincial government relations minister Jim Reiter and federal agriculture minister and Battlefords-Lloydminster MP Gerry Ritz.

In a statement issued Friday, Reiter welcomed the revenue to Saskatchewan municipalities provided by the agreement.

"The renewed Gas Tax Fund provides a source of revenue for Saskatchewan municipalities to address their priority infrastructure projects, such as building roads and improving water and sewage treatment," Reiter said.

"These projects help build vibrant communities and improve the quality of life for all Saskatchewan people. I want to thank the Government of Canada for providing a source of long-term, stable funding to Saskatchewan municipalities during this time of growth in our province."
