After receiving a donation from the Lutheran Vacation Bible School last week, the Humboldt & District Soup Kitchen received another donation this week.
The Watson Quilters Guild donated 117 hand quilted gift bags that will be used to hand out gifts to those that attend the Christmas Day dinner.
As an added bonus, the guild teamed up with the Parish from Scared Heart Church in Watson to collect games, clothing, food and cleaning supplies to help fill the gift bags.
Georgette Mills came to the Community Gathering Place to donate the items she said that the quilters guild and the parish were very happy to make the donation.
Linda Jurgens, an assistant coordinator with the Humboldt Soup Kitchen, was equally as pleased with the donation from the quilt guild.
“The way they gather around by helping, it’s phenomenal. Like these bags that the ladies made… the quilt guild ladies made them all and then to gather all the rest of the stuff like holy.”
The soup kitchen has been very fortunate over the last few weeks; having received the aforementioned Lutheran Vacation Bible School donation and the Watson Quilters Guild donation, as well as the Good Neighbour Store as part of their annual redistribution.
Jurgens said the soup kitchen is blown away by all the support.
“It’s really incredible how the surrounding community as well as Humboldt contribute to the wide need of people that are in need of it.” She said.
The soup kitchen is very grateful for the donations but can always use more help.
The soup kitchen is always looking for volunteers to help with their weekly meal and with special events like the Christmas Day dinner.
The event on Christmas Day starts at 2:00 at the Community Gathering Place with fun and games. Santa will make an appearance and will hand out gifts.
The Christmas dinner, which will be served from 5-6, will be a traditional Christmas dinner including turkey and ham, potatoes, dressing, vegetables, salads and dessert.
If you are alone this Christmas, Jurgens encourages you to come to the gathering place for dinner.
“Christmas can be a very lonely time so please don’t feel like you’re intruding because you are not, please come down and enjoy the good meal we have to offer.”
