It used to belong to the City of Humboldt but as of Sept. 1, the Good Neighbour Store board will have ownership of their own building.
City Manager Roy Hardy announced during the July 10 council meeting that the Good Neighbour Store board and the city have agreed upon a price for their building on the corner of 8th Street and 3rd Avenue.
The building has belonged to the City for many years, says Hardy, but the store board wanted some more security.
“At some point you take a look at the relationship or where you want to go and you have some questions if the city were in a position where all of the sudden it wanted to get rid of assets, what would the Good Neighbour Store see in terms seeing itself moving, those types of things.”
Them owning their building and having the power to stay and renovate as much as they need, just makes sense, says Hardy, as the board will have the stability that they want to continue providing for the community.
“The Good Neighbour Store was providing great service, you saw benefits back into the community...it’s a great service being provided for our residents.”
Maureen Doetzel says they have already put in $300,000 worth of renovations over the past 10 years, now was the time to have the comfort in owning the building.
“We just thought we wanted to (purchase the building), who knows what will happen next.”
As well as taking over ownership of their building, the Good Neighbour Store will also be celebrating their 25th anniversary come this September.
