SASKATOON – Update: Social media posts are saying that Cory Lee Rushkewich has been arrested but Saskatchewan RCMP say he has not been apprehended.

“The Saskatchewan RCMP is still looking for Cory Rushkewich as a dangerous wanted offender,” RCMP said in an email to SaskToday Friday morning.

Original story: A Rosetown man accused of a vicious assault that left another man in a medically induced coma, fighting for his life in a Saskatoon hospital, failed to appear in court and is now listed among Saskatchewan’s most wanted fugitives.

Cory Lee Rushkewich, 34, may be in Rosetown, Saskatoon or Ituna, say Saskatchewan RCMP.

His charges stem from an incident in November 2023 when RCMP received a report of a robbery and serious assault in Rosetown.

The Rosetown RCMP investigation determined there was an altercation between a group of individuals in the 1st Street West area. A man stole a cellphone from a woman and pointed a firearm at several individuals during the incident. A male victim was then assaulted and treated in hospital for serious injuries, said RCMP.

The next day, Rosetown RCMP arrested Cory Rushkewich and his brother, Randy Darcy Rushkewich, both from Rosetown. They were each charged with aggravated assault. Cory Rushkewich was also charged with three counts of pointing a firearm and robbery in the incident.

Last month, Randy Rushkewich was sentenced to 52 days in jail and 12 months of probation.

Cory Rushkewich failed to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on May 4 and a bench warrant was issued. In June, Saskatchewan RCMP listed him as No. 13 on their most wanted list.

The male victim of the attack, Andre Grey, was in hospital for months after being placed in a medically induced coma. Grey’s mother, Alice El Khirani, told SaskToday in November 2023 that the brutal attack against her son lasted about 20 minutes and his cries for help went unheeded.

After the assault, Grey was able to walk to a nearby friend’s house and she texted his mother. El Khirani was about a block away and said she rushed over. Having worked for years in the health field, she recognized the signs of a possible brain injury in her son and immediately took him to the Rosetown hospital. After a doctor saw him there, he was transported to a Saskatoon hospital by ambulance.

El Khirani, along with her husband and other son, who also lives in Rosetown, followed in a vehicle behind the ambulance.

“We chased after the ambulance,” she said.

El Khirani said that at the Saskatoon hospital, Grey's condition worsened with a brain bleed and he started having seizures. He was placed into a medically induced coma and doctors inserted a tube to drain blood and fluid from his brain. Among his many injuries from the assault was a broken skull.

RCMP say not to attempt to contact, approach or apprehend Cory Rushkewich on your own. If you see him, or have information regarding his whereabouts, activities or associations, call 310-RCMP (310-7257) or 911 in an emergency.

Saskatchewan RCMP frontline officers work alongside specialized teams, such as the Saskatchewan RCMP Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Teams (WEST), to apprehend wanted offenders in Saskatchewan communities. RCMP WEST works closely with RCMP detachments, federal and provincial corrections, and municipal police forces in an effort to arrest high-profile offenders with outstanding warrants. RCMP WEST is supported in warrant apprehension efforts by the SERT analytical team, which provides targeting and prioritization data to help focus enforcement on the highest-priority offenders in Saskatchewan.
