Grad: Life is about the climb for Star City grads

Welcome grads, escorts, teachers, parents, friends, members of the SCC, and significant others. Some of you may know me, but some of you may not, as I am the class new kid. I came in Grade 1.

Welcome grads, escorts, teachers, parents, friends, members of the SCC, and significant others.

Some of you may know me, but some of you may not, as I am the class new kid. I came in Grade 1. I am Cassidy McMunn and thank you for coming to the Star City Grad 2018 ceremony.

And I am Colby Donald; the local import from Prince Albert, Sask., the most wholesome place in our province, as you can’t spell party without P.A.

I love numbers, so lets look at some statistics from over the years:

  • 42.8 per cent of us have been in car accidents that have resulted in the vehicle being written off;
  • 85.7 per cent of us have our licence;
  • 14.2 per cent of us become outraged at the mention of eating at Montana’s, it’s the principle;
  • 71.4 per cent of us have significant others;
  • 100 per cent of us are glad they put the gravel down in the student parking lot, even though we’re leaving.

Another stat is the population of Star City is about 300 people, so some would say it’s a small town. I would agree, but for a small school and a small 2018 Grad class, we still made lots of memories.

Our fondest memory as a class has to be the Grad RV, it has and will carry us many places, and there’s a chance that place may end up being the hospital, but it will be worth it. Or it may be no place at all if we don’t have gas and the battery is dead, which unfortunately has happened already – a couple times.

Although we never took the RV to KCs or on our daily city service runs, we will forever cherish all the grilled cheese sandwiches had, and all the junk food and snacks bought, especially Emma’s pizza pops. Although I’m sure Emma could get pizza pops from the Tisdale Beeland Co-op where she has been working since 2016, and man are those uniforms sick.

Another class treasured memory, one that is shared with one of our guest speakers, Mrs. Jensen, is a question Brydon asked in Grade 10 science. I think it is time that we answer Brydon’s long unanswered question, a heat sink is a device or substance for absorbing excessive or unwanted heat. Does that make sense, Brydon?

So far it may seem like all we care about in this class is food, if one assumes that they wouldn’t be entirely wrong. Our class is much less motivated than we may seem, as we didn’t start planning this grad until April, but we also have passion of some kind for other things. I guess. Kinda. Maybe.

As an example, this year Layne has found a new passion for the Interior Design Grind, and has created many beautiful homes and rooms for Cassidy to approve of. I mean he also won the Midget Centre Four League Championship, and the Midget AA Provincial title with his hockey team, but like that’s only minor.

Noah, Colby and I also have a fiery passion for the small country of Luxembourg located in Europe. Every year on June 9 we celebrate Luxembourg Independence Day with our matching t-shirts. Noah forgot his shirt last year and we made him go home and get it so we could properly celebrate this gracious holiday which happens to be today, so happy Luxembourg Independence Day everyone!

In Grade 6, our class started the Star City Millennium Action Team (MAT). We accomplished many things, such as buying a mascot for the school and we won some provincial awards. But, as time went by (and motivation went down) MAT was disbanded, and we could focus on more important things such as keeping those brows fleek and eyelashes long at Anna. She’s come a long way since she cut her own bangs in kindergarten.

Another strong passion that is definitely worth the mention would have to be Brydon’s pure skill and talent at building the most amazing glue stick towers out of the many he has stored in his pencil box that he has used since Kindergarten. Brydon also had a limp for a long time, but he is cured! He had surgery on May 4, the force was with him and he managed to prevail!

Over the past years in school, we did manage to accomplish a few things (we are at a grad ceremony), but we would not have been able to do it alone. We had the help of our wonderful teachers, school staff, and of course Mrs. Wingert, we would not be here without you. We definitely would not be here if it wasn’t for our loving parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and all of the family and friends that have helped us out along the way.

In our 13 years here at Star City School we have each accomplished many things, made lots of memories, ate many a snack, and of course procrastinated a lot. As we move forward in life, we must always remember that the sidewalks were always there to keep us off the street, except we don’t really have sidewalks, so we were on the streets anyways, of course our hips were always there and never once did they lie. And we will always have the bond that was created since we were so young.

And as we close I would like to leave you with a quote from writer and street poet Miley Cyrus;

There’s always gonna be another mountain

I’m always gonna wanna make it move

Always gonna be an uphill battle

Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there

Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side

It’s the climb

Thank you.
