Grade 8 classes from all three Humboldt elementary schools took to the Humboldt Aquatic Centre pool to race their homemade cardboard boats during the annual grade 8 boat races on June 18.
Students were given minimal supplies of tape, string, and cardboard to design and build their watercraft and then race them against fellow teams.
In the end, Humboldt Public School took home the prize for the first time in five years of competition.
Below is what the students had to say about competing for the coveted trophy.
What was the best part of the boat races?

“Seeing how everyone’s boat actually floated, and seeing how some of the boats worked that you thought would not. It was interesting to see how everyone’s ideas were formulated.”

What did you learn from building your boat?
Humboldt Public School

“You should maybe try design ahead of time.”

Go in blind, make what you want, and it might just work.

“That if you don’t do a good job your boat won’t float.”
