With Habitat for Humanity - Battlefords turning the sod this week on their duplex build in North Battleford, the City of North Battleford has agreed to a request for a grant towards the project.

The resolution approving the donation was approved unanimously, which covers the cost of a building permit for the project.

A delegation from the Battlefords chapter of Habitat for Humanity made a presentation before the full council to request the donation.

Marilyn Richardson said the project has the “potential of addressing issues of affordable home ownership in our community, and we would like to give the City of North Battleford an opportunity to partner with us by providing this contribution towards the initial build.”

Councillor Cathy Richardson was a strong supporter of the resolution.

“I strongly believe it’s a small ask for the City to be a part of this, which meets a lot of criteria for our safety. And that’s an area of town where we’re building that’s part of our safety issues and I’m strongly in support,” she said.

There was some discussion about whether the grant could have been covered instead by community grants program voted on by the Leisure Services Committee. Leisure Services Director Bill Samborski confirmed it didn’t qualify for that.

The biggest stumbling block for council was figuring out what the cost of the building permit was. There was conflicting information on whether it was $1,684, or $1,864.

In any event, the grant resolution carried unanimously.

This is a big week for the Habitat for Humanity organization as they hold their official sod turning for their new duplex build, to be located at 1211- 106th Street in North Battleford. The sod turning happens Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
