Habitat for Humanity is steadily working toward the goal of helping people help themselves into permanent sustainable housing.

Habitat for Humanity of the Battlefords has partnered with Saskatoon Habitat for Humanity to access their expertise with this first project in the Battlefords. A board has been formed. To date they have been hard at work procuring the property and have raised approximately $80,000. Another $70,000 cash (or materials/services in kind) is needed before the sod can be turned on this project.

Glenn and Caren Hornick have donated the land at 1211-106th Street. A duplex has been chosen for the architectural design for this property.

Habitat for Humanity of the Battlefords will be holding a garage sale at the fall fair Saturday, Sept. 20. The proceeds from this sale will go to Habitat for Humanity build here in the Battlefords.

One hundred per cent of all donations received go directly to building affordable homes for local families. Habitat for Humanity provides a hand up, not a hand out. Volunteers working on the project learn essential skills.

There are often opportunities for students to be involved in hands-on learning towards their journeyman programs.

Habitat for Humanity Canada has a policy in place for the selection of the families. The local board is required to hold a public meeting. At the public meeting, families who are interested in one of our duplexes may get an application. Applications are not available from board members. Applications are available only at the public meeting. The board hopes to hold the public meeting early in 2015 or as soon as the next $70,000 has been raised.

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Please contact Ed at 306-441-0525, Cathy at 306-481-6583 or Nadine at 306-445-1459 to learn about getting involved.

Volunteers are currently needed to help with the garage sale in September. Charitable receipts are provided for all donations of $20 or more. Donations may be left at the Innovation Credit Union c/o Lynn Balicki.
