Hairy winter weekend on roads

Saskatchewan was hit with another severe winter storm on the weekend, and while it was mainly the area south of the Battlefords that bore the brunt of the storm, the community did not escape travel advisories.

North Battleford RCMP issued an advisory Saturday night advising the public that travel was not recommended around the Battlefords that evening. RCMP reported the snow continued to blow across the highway making it icy and slippery. Sections of the highway were snow-packed with swirling and drifting snow, and visibility was severely reduced.

The situation on area roads was a lot better by Monday. The Saskatchewan Highway Hotline reported that most roads around the Battlefords had mostly returned to normal winter conditions, though winter conditions and some slippery sections were being reported on Highway 4.

The conditions on the roads proved hazardous throughout the province on the weekend. The provincial government reported that a Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure snowplow truck was hit while clearing snow on Highway 1 under the Highway 10 overpass near Balgonie Sunday.

The unit was hit by a semi around 1:45 p.m. Both units sustained heavy damage but there were no injuries. The province is again warning motorists to be on the lookout for snow plows and to reduce their speed, stay back and stay safe.
