Hall Lake man to stand trial in La Ronge court for murder

LA RONGE – A Hall Lake man will stand trial on a second-degree murder charge in the death of 29-year-old Muhammad Venne.

A three-day preliminary hearing was held Nov. 22 for 21-year-old Keegan Nelson-Smith and there was enough evidence for Nelson-Smith to stand trial. The details of preliminary hearings can’t be published.

A badly injured Venne was found outside a home at approximately 4 a.m. on June 3, 2020, after RCMP responded to a disturbance at a home on Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Venne died in hospital a short time later.

Nelson-Smith was arrested in January 2021.

In August 2020, Venne’s family and friends held a march down La Ronge Avenue chanting “Justice for Muhammed.”

A trial date hasn’t been scheduled yet in La Ronge Court of Queen’s Bench.
