Hawks roll past North Stars
The Nipawin Hawks built a lead and held on this time as they knocked off the Battlefords North Stars in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from North Battleford on Jan. 26.
The win over the North Stars came 17 days after the Hawks built up a 3-0 first period lead at home against the North Stars, only to see the lead disappear and the club lose in a shootout.
The contest got off to about as perfect a start as the visitors could have asked for as Jake Tremblay scored his tenth goal of the season, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the opening period.
After Brad Girard scored his fifth of the year to tie the game at one, Logan Casavant put the Hawks back in front with his 13th goal of the season, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead after one period.
The second period nearly finished scoreless, but Chad McCartney scored with just 1:32 to go, giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Tyler Adams stretched the Hawks’ advantage to three goals at 7:31 of the third, scoring his third goal of the season as the Hawks rolled to the 4-1 win.
Both teams were busy on special teams in the contest as they combined for 13 power plays, with the Hawks converting on 2-of-8 opportunities, and the North Stars on 1-of-5.
Declan Hobbs picked up the win in the Hawks goal turning aside 24 of the 25 shots he faced, as the Hawks outshot the North Stars 30-25.
Hawks build second period lead and hang on to beat Klippers
It was not perfect but the Nipawin Hawks extended their incredible points streak to 26 straight games with a 3-2 win over the Kindersley Klippers in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Kindersley.
The Jan. 27 contest saw the Hawks score three times in the middle frame to pick up the win.
The game got off to a slow start for the Hawks as they were outshot 10-7, but neither team managed to find the back of the net.
After a scoreless opening period the Hawks came alive in the second as they dominated the Klippers scoring three times, and outshooting the home side 11-4.
Josh McDougall opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the season on the power play.
Newly acquired Hawk Wayde Johannesson added his first goal with his new club less than three minutes later and Brandan Arnold added his 26th of the year, in his first game since suffering an injury before Christmas, less than two minutes after that giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead after two periods of play.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the third period did not go overly well as they gave up the 3-1 goal just 53 seconds into the period and gave up the 3-2 goal with 4:43 to play.
With the Hawks clinging to a one goal lead, Jake Anthony was equal to the task down the stretch turning away every shot he faced as the Hawks hung on for the 3-2 win.
It was another busy night for the Hawks’ special teams, as they hit the ice for 13 combined power plays, matching the mark set the night before in North Battleford.
The two teams combined for 120 penalty minutes, with 100 of them in the third period, as the Hawks finished the evening 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while the Klippers finished 1-for-8.
Anthony picked up the win in the Hawks goal turning aside 19 of the 21 shots he faced as the Hawks outshot the Klippers 26-21.
The Hawks will look to push their point streak to 27 consecutive games when they return to action on 30 for a home matchup against the Yorkton Terriers.
