Hearing set for Island Lake man accused of attempted murder

Kirk Crookedneck was charged after a man was injured when shots were fired into a home

MEADOW LAKE – On Monday a preliminary hearing was set for an Island Lake First Nation man charged with attempted murder.

The hearing for 30-year-old Kirk Crookedneck is scheduled for June 16 in Loon Lake circuit court.

Last week a hearing for 22-year-old Andrew Opikokew from Mudie Lake First Nation was scheduled for Aug. 18.

Crookedneck, along with Opikokew, Kashtin Lee Sandfly, and Harold Mitsuing Jr., were charged following an incident Dec. 21, 2021, where a shot was fired at a home on Island Lake First Nation, which injured a man inside. Police found the injured man four hours later in a vehicle in a remote area and due to the snow-covered road police had to take him to a main road for medical attention.

Crookedneck was charged with attempted murder aggravated assault, and discharging a firearm while being reckless.

Opikokew, Mitsuing, and Sandfly were charged with discharging a firearm while being reckless, and being an occupant of a vehicle with a firearm.

Sandfly also faces a charge of possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime in Lloydminster court.
