History of family farms to be featured again

Farms don’t seem to be anything special these days. They’re just a part of life; something that came from out past and will endure into our future if only to feed the masses. Because of that, many people often overlook the benefit they provide for societies around the world. Not just for Humboldt or Saskatchewan; farms are the cornerstone that feed people all over the world thanks to trade and exports.

As such, the importance of where farms came from shouldn’t be forgotten. Sure, ownership changes as farms become more industrialized, but the past shouldn’t be left behind; it should be carried with us. Each farm has its own legacy that is inherited and built upon from generation to generation and those ought to be remembered.

Last year, the Humboldt Journal and East Central Trader ran a special where people were asked to send in their own stories and photos about their farms. There was the story of the man whose father emigrated from Scotland and whose head had nearly been taken by the harrows. Then there are the Bromms from Tisdale who were way ahead of the organic farming trend when they went fully organic in 1982. Finally, there was the notable example of Gerhard Jansen, whose hospitality earned him a lake named after him: Jansen Lake.

All of these stories and more are the birthright of the Saskatchewan people. Most people here can trace their lineage or their heritage back in some way to these pioneers, which gives them roots to these soils. To credit and continue that tradition, the Humboldt Journal is once again requesting that people send in their stories and their photos of their farms for this year’s feature History of the Farm.

Photos and stories can be mailed, dropped off at the office, or emailed to [email protected]
