ARMLEY — RCMP are reporting a serious collision between a hockey team’s bus and a semi-trailer unit near the intersection of Highways #35 and #335.
The Star-Phoenix reports the bus was the Humboldt Broncos’.
Police said there were 29 on the bus. As of 12:35 p.m. April 7, 14 have died. The remaining 15 were sent to hospital with various injuries. Three have critical injuries. RCMP are not revealing the identities or positions of those deceased.
Nipawin RCMP, along with emergency personnel, including the Tisdale Fire Department, are currently on scene and are continuing rescue efforts.
Traffic is blocked near the scene and RCMP said they expect that to continue for several hours, with drivers facing lengthy delays. Drivers are asked to use extreme caution when driving in the area, and are asked to avoid the area altogether if possible.
A gathering point has been established at Nipawin’s Apostolic Church on 109 4th Ave. East for families and friends. RCMP say more information will be provided there. Emergency measures personnel will be at the church, as will Victim Services representatives.
Kevin Garinger, the Broncos' president, gave the following statement to the media:
“Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the families of our staff and athletes as well as to all who have been impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Broncos family is in shock as we try to come to grips with our incredible loss.”
This is a breaking story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
