Hockey fans, rejoice: this year’s induction ceremony for the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame will be held at the Elgar Petersen Arena on July 17.

This year marks the fourth year of the ceremony and was previously held in Swift Current, Regina, and Prince Albert.

Though it’s still about six months away, planning is underway by co-chairs Jamie Brockman and Michael Ulriksen. The event is a partnership between the City of Humboldt and the Humboldt Broncos.

“It’s awesome,” Brockman said of the decision. “With the inductees with the Humboldt connection, it’s really good.”

The following are the aforementioned inductees with the Humboldt connection:

Elgar Peterson – everyone will recognize this name. During his time as a volunteer with Humboldt Minor Hockey, he served as a coach, mentor, and player. Of course, to recognize his contributions, the local arena was named after him.

Kevin Muench – Muench has been an official with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association since 1976. He has been a referee at the Olympics, Memorial Cup championships, and Royal Bank Cup championships.

“Doc” Gerry Rooney- Rooney is the “father of the Humboldt Broncos”  according to Brockman. He helped establish the Broncos and helped lead them to two league championships as manager and assistant coach.

The 2002-2003 Humboldt Broncos- During that year, the Broncos finished first in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and were the Royal Bank Cup champions after beating the Camrose Kodiaks.

The event will have a dinner and induction ceremony, which is open to the public. Anyone can purchase tickets for $100 at the arena. There are roughly 750 tickets.

The proceeds of the banquet will be split evenly between the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame and the Broncos/City of Humboldt. Brockman hopes to make $30,000, which will then be split between the Broncos and the City. The City will use it to improve the Uniplex and the Broncos plan to use their portion for an updated dressing room.

“It’s just to recognize their contributions to not only Humboldt, but Saskatchewan,” Brockman said. “It’s important to acknowledge those people for their efforts. They worked hard and they deserve it.”

Other inductees are Wendel Clark (Kelvington), Dave Tiger Williams (Weyburn), Victor Lynn (Saskatoon), Dave King (North Battleford), Robert John Jackie McLeod (Regina), the Simpson Flyers, and the 1933-1934 Saskatoon Quakers.
