CARROT RIVER — A member of Carrot River’s council has resigned.
Robin Horn, who was a councillor for almost six years, made the decision because she and her family left town. In her letter of resignation, she said she was pleased to serve an amazing community.
“She was a really good councillor because she wasn’t scared to give her opinion on any subject, was very vocal and sharp,” said Bob Gagné, Carrot River’s mayor, after the May 23 council meeting.
The mayor added Horn also brought female representation to a male-dominated council. The resignation leaves only one woman on council.
A byelection to replace Horn will be held Oct. 23.
Concrete work
Council also voted to spend $223,000 to replace concrete around town. The biggest project will be to replace the sidewalk on 3rd Avenue, where the arena and curling rink are located.
“It’s a sidewalk that nobody uses because it’s in such disrepair that when people walk on the street all of the time, they walk on the street, not on the sidewalk,” said Kevin Trew, the town’s administrator.
While they are doing that, they’ll also move the sidewalk back four feet, widening the road. The extra road won’t be paved this year.
“It won’t make the street that much wider but it is definitely a street in the wintertime that’s very crowded,” Trew said.
The work will be done by North Star Concrete. The price doesn’t include the cost of tearing out any old concrete.
Trew said the town has had a backlog of projects requiring cement for years, but the projects weren’t big enough to justify bringing in a contractor. Now that North Star Concrete will be in the area and is offering a lower price, it was time to act.
“Somebody might say, ‘why sidewalks when there’s a lot to be done on streets?’ I can say we need to chip away at these infrastructure problems and right now we have a cement contractor that’s going to be in the area.”
