A reminder to North Battleford residents and others in the area that Household Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday, April 30.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents are encouraged to come down to the City’s Public Works Shop (11112 – 6th Ave.) to dispose of household waste items. The annual event is well used by local residents, with about 65 vehicles coming to drop off hazardous waste items last year.

While there are certain items that are accepted materials, there are also items that are not being accepted Saturday. The full list is found at the Garbage & Recycling section (under “Residents”) on www.cityofnb.ca.

According to the City’s news release this week, it is accepting the following items at the Public Works Shop on Saturday: adhesives, aerosols, automotive (carburetor cleaners, oil fuel), cleaners, corrosives, fuels, mercury, oxidizers, poisons and solvents.

These items should be in their original containers and be clearly labeled.

Other items will not be accepted at that location, mainly because they can be disposed of elsewhere in the city for free. These items include paint (which is accepted at Sarcan), electronics (Sarcan), batteries (waste management facility for automotive, alkaline (City Hall, phone ahead), used oil or antifreeze (waste management facility), propane cylinders (waste management facilities), fluorescent bulbs (City Hall), mercury thermostats (City Hall) and medication (accepted at pharmacies participating in the Medication Return Program).

The plan is to hold another Household Hazardous Waste Day again in the fall, with a tentative date of Sept. 24.
