It all started as a fundraising opportunity.
For one Humboldt youth, it meant a chance to join the Humboldt and District Ambulance Services for a day of being a paramedic.
Dave Mortensen with the Humboldt and District Ambulance says they were approached for a donation for the St. Dominic School playground fundraiser and made something work that fit within confidentiality guidelines.
Thanks to a winning bid from her mom, eight-year-old Marley Barnes-Stuckel joined the Humboldt EMS on June 4, which also coincided with Paramedic Services week.
Marley received her own stethoscope and first aid kit, got to take part in routine checks of the ambulances, and toured the Humboldt and District Ambulance building and ambulance with Mortensen, as well as lunch with fellow paramedics.
Marley also received an ice cream cake thanks to the ambulance service and was toured around for the day in the ambulance.
According to Marley, she enjoyed the day and was impressed by the hard work that goes into being a paramedic with the average day being about 10 patients.
It was a lot of work to do the morning checks but Marley says she enjoyed the ambulance the most.
Krissi Barnes, Marley’s mom, was surprised at lunch by how much the radio was going off with one paramedic taking two bites of pizza before having to answer a call.
“They work really hard. I could not imagine what they go through in a day,” says Krissi.
After such an awesome day, Marley says she is going to study hard so that one day she can become a paramedic.
Paramedic Services week was May 27-June 2.
Humboldt and District Ambulance posted a video to Facebook to celebrate and raise awareness for the work they do in Humboldt and area, including work with schools, Safe Communities, and the Humboldt and District Hopsital Emergency Department.
The video also included photos of the different kinds of equipment needed for staff to do their jobs.
