HUMBOLDT — The Saskatchewan government has released the list of community projects recommended for federal funding and Humboldt’s lagoon upgrade is on the list of 126 projects.
The $34 million wastewater Treatment System upgrade will now be considered for federal funding approval under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) and if approved, will see the federal government covering 40 per cent of the project. The province has already committed over $11 million to the project, according to a press release from the City of Humboldt.
With federal and provincial funding possibly reaching $25 million, the city will be covering the remaining $9 million.
Mayor Rob Muench said this discussion regarding the lagoon upgrades have been ongoing since he was first elected mayor back in 2016. Discussions with Humboldt-Watrous MLA Donna Harpauer have been instrumental in moving this project forward.
“I thank her and the Province for being instrumental in supporting this important infrastructure project and moving it to this next step. I look forward to the federal government’s final decision,” Muench said.
With Humboldt’s growing community, the current lagoon system has been having ongoing problems, especially with odour control, and was constructed to accommodate a 6,000 people population. Council approved the new Submerged Attached Growth Reactor System back in February of 2020, which will accommodate 10,000 people.
In the past 10 years, ICIP has provided $896 million of federal funding for projects across Saskatchewan, said the press release.
