With the success of last year’s Humboldt Summer Sizzler, the City of Humboldt says they are building off a good thing with the return of many favourite activities and the start of some new ones.
During conversations after the 2017 Sizzler, it was decided that the weekend was too packed with events that a lot of them were overlapping each other. Stevenson says they are working to alleviate that for the 2018 Sizzler.
As well as the Sizzler Strut on June 10, Michelle Stevenson, recreation program coordinator with the community and leisure services department, says the weekend of events will kick off on June 14 with the kick off concert at the Uniplex and the opening of the Midway.
The concert will still be outside with the weather permitting but logistically, Stevenson says this works a little better to have it on the Uniplex grounds.
The rest of the weekend will be a mix of old and new events. The demolition derby will have their own day on June 17. This also meant a break for the JCI who also have the cabaret to operate on June 15 and will get a day off before working on the demolition derby.
Lee Gross with the Humboldt chapter of the JCIs says Dixon County Rebels will be rocking their cabaret with doors opening around 9 p.m.
This is the second year that the demolition derby will be taking place at the Humboldt Airport with shuttles running at 3 p.m. from the Humboldt Uniplex.
People were a bit skeptical last year, says Gross, but the JCIs are settling in.
“We’re trying to use it the best we can to make it accessible to everyone and in the future keep making improvements to it.”
Proceeds from the event will be going into improving that area for future events, says Gross.
Even with the move to the outskirts of Humboldt, the demolition derby will not be alone, says Stevenson.
“We have tried to move a couple other things out to the airport on Sunday as well to get people moving in that direction.” This includes the pancake breakfast and the car show.
While the weekend is full of events and activities, Stevenson says the city is always looking for more involvement from the community and are willing to offer support wherever it is needed.
