Seniors in Humboldt are getting active by attempting to walk the distance to the moon.
They’re not doing this feat alone – 50 groups from around Saskatchewan will be logging their walking distance in the hopes of getting a combined total of 384,400 kilometres: the distance to the moon. The initiative is associated with the Saskatoon Council on Aging.
“The purpose is to get people active,” said Carol Hoffos, an organizer for the Humboldt moonwalk.
Last year participants in the province had a goal of walking around the globe, which they achieved seven times over.
“They decided that this year they would try to the moon, and next year they’ll come back,” Hoffos said.
In Humboldt, there are 18 participants logging their distances until the end of April (it started in January).
Some seniors spend an hour walking around the Community Gathering Place four times a week, but others just log the distances they walk in their daily lives with a pedometer.
“I hope they get a healthier lifestyle. Activity gets people off their chairs,” Hoffos said.
It looks like the older generation might be the first to succeed when it comes to reaching for the moon.
